Česká spořitelna Savings Account: who it's for
The savings account from Česká spořitelna is a flexible product for short- and medium-term saving with instant access to your money — unlike a term deposit, it has no fixed lock-in period. You can add funds to the account or withdraw them at any time without losing the right to further interest on the remaining balance. The bank requires no minimum deposit or minimum balance, so the account suits even a client who just wants to set aside smaller amounts, or build up an emergency reserve for unexpected expenses. Opening and maintaining the account is free.
Interest rate and the conditions for getting it
The advertised rate of 3.80% p.a. sounds attractive at first glance, but it only applies if specific conditions are met, and only up to a certain balance — this is the most important thing to know before opening the account. To actually receive the 3.80% p.a. rate, a client must simultaneously meet all three of the following conditions: hold a Plus account (Česká spořitelna's current account) with the bank, actively use the George mobile/internet banking app, and regularly invest or contribute to pension savings with at least CZK 2,000 per month. If even one of these three conditions is missing, the client does not get the bonus rate.
The bonus rate also only applies to a balance up to CZK 400,000. Above that threshold, the bank pays just 0.01% p.a. — a practically negligible return. Clients with larger savings should therefore expect the real benefit of the account to grow only up to that cap, and may need to place any additional money elsewhere if they want a higher yield.
Conditions and fees
The bank charges no fee for opening or maintaining the savings account and requires no minimum deposit or balance. Money in the account is available at any time with no notice period, so the account can also serve as an emergency reserve for unexpected expenses. The bank also does not charge a fee for domestic incoming payments to this account. A practical consequence of the bonus-rate conditions, however, is that the savings account isn't really a fully standalone product for clients of other banks — the top rate is only actually achieved by someone who already has (or opens) a Plus current account with Česká spořitelna and actively uses it together with the George app and a regular investment or pension payment. Anyone looking for a savings account purely "on the side" of another bank, without committing to further products, won't reach the full rate here.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No minimum deposit or balance
- Free account opening and maintenance, including free domestic incoming payments
- Money available at any time with no notice period
Cons
- The 3.80% p.a. rate requires meeting three conditions at once
- The bonus rate only applies up to CZK 400,000; above that, just 0.01% p.a.
- Effectively requires a Plus account and the George app
Summary
Česká spořitelna's savings account offers a competitive rate of 3.80% p.a., but only for clients who simultaneously hold a Plus account with the bank, use the George app, and regularly invest or save for retirement with at least CZK 2,000 per month — and only up to a balance of CZK 400,000. For such a client, this is a free account with instant access to funds and a solid return. Anyone who doesn't meet these conditions, or who has saved more than CZK 400,000, will get only a fraction of the stated rate from this account.
